5 Practical Sustainability Metrics (Aligned with UN SDGs)

This initiative focuses on simple, measurable actions that every ambassador can drive within their organization.

1. Energy Consumption Reduction

Metric: kWh Saved

SDGs: SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG 13 – Climate Action

Reduce electricity consumption at your workplace through behavioural and technical changes.

2. Sustainable Transportation

Metric: KM Carpooled / Biked / Walked

SDGs: SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities, SDG 13 – Climate Action

Promote carpooling, public transport, cycling, or walking instead of solo car rides.

3. Water Conservation

Metric: Litres of Water Saved

SDGs: SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation

Encourage leak reporting, low-flow fixtures, and mindful use of water in offices.

4. Responsible Waste Management

Metric: KG of E-waste / Recyclables Properly Disposed

SDGs: SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production

Collect and route e-waste and recyclables to authorized recyclers, away from landfills.

5. Sustainable Consumption & Procurement

Metric: # of Times Reusable Item Used

SDGs: SDG 12, 14, 15

Promote reusable cups, bottles, and bags to cut down single-use plastics and packaging.

🏅 Incentivization Strategy

A strong incentivization strategy uses a mix of recognition, learning, and tangible rewards to keep engagement high, regardless of the industry segment.

1. Recognition and Visibility (Highest Impact)

  • PMI Sustainability Champion Certificate: A formal certificate and badge awarded to participants achieving a score above 80 points.
  • "Impact Leaderboard": Publish the ranked scores (individual and/or team) on the PMI Gujarat Chapter's website and social media.
  • Case Study Feature: Showcase the top achiever's story (e.g., "How an IT Professional Saved 5 KG of E-Waste") in the chapter newsletter or at chapter events.
  • Chapter Felicitation: Public recognition and trophy/plaque awarded during a major chapter event (e.g., Chapter Meeting or Conference).

2. Learning and Development (Value Addition)

  • Free PDU-Eligible Webinar: Offer a free session (e.g., on Green Project Management, Sustainable Business Practices, or UN SDGs) to participants who achieve a score above 50 points.
  • Exclusive Resource Access: Grant access to a curated library of sustainable project management tools, articles, or templates.

3. Tangible Rewards (Engagement Driver)

  • Tiered Gift Vouchers:
    • Gold Tier (Top 3): Vouchers for sustainable products, local plant nurseries, or eco-friendly services.
    • Silver Tier (Next 5%): Customized, reusable merchandise featuring the PMI chapter and initiative logo (e.g., metal water bottles, bamboo cutlery sets).
  • Incentive Drawing: Enter all participants who score above a minimum threshold (e.g., 20 points) into a raffle for a single high-value item, like a quality bicycle or an annual subscription to a sustainable service.

Scoring System – How Your Impact is Measured

The scoring model is simple to understand, easy to communicate, and fair across different kinds of actions. Each metric has a point-per-unit value based on environmental impact and effort. These are then converted into a standardized 0–100 score.

1. Points per Unit

Metric Unit Environmental Impact Factor Points per Unit
Energy Reduction 1 kWh Saved High 3 points / kWh
Sustainable Transport 1 KM Carpooled / Biked / Walked Medium 1 point / KM
Water Conservation 100 Litres Saved Medium 2 points / 100 L
Responsible Waste Management 1 KG E-waste / Recyclables Very High 5 points / KG
Reusable Item Use 1 Reusable Use Low / Medium 1 point / use

If you log units Ui for metric i, and each unit earns Pi points, then your raw sustainability score for the period is:

STotal = Σ ( Ui × Pi )    for i = 1 … 5

Example (1 month):

  • 15 kWh saved → 15 × 3 = 45 points
  • 120 KM carpooled → 120 × 1 = 120 points
  • 500 L water saved → (500 / 100) × 2 = 10 points
  • 2.5 KG e-waste → 2.5 × 5 = 12.5 points
  • 40 reusable uses → 40 × 1 = 40 points

Total Raw Score: 45 + 120 + 10 + 12.5 + 40 = 227.5 points

2. Standardized 100-Point Mechanism

To make scores comparable across industries and company sizes, each metric is also mapped to a 0–100 scale with predefined weights. The maximum achievable score is 100.

Metric Aligned UN SDGs Impact Weighting Points Allocated (out of 100)
Energy Consumption Reduction SDG 7, 13 High 25
Sustainable Transportation SDG 11, 13 Medium 20
Water Conservation SDG 6 Medium 15
Responsible Waste Management SDG 12 Very High 30
Sustainable Consumption & Procurement SDG 12, 14, 15 Low / Medium 10

For each metric i, if you achieve a total of UAchieved units against a challenge target of UTarget Max, your normalized score for that metric is:

Si = PAllocated × min( 1, UAchieved / UTarget Max )

3. 30-Day Challenge Targets

For a typical 30-day challenge, the following targets are used to earn the full allocated points:

Metric Unit Target Max (30 Days) Points at Target
Energy Reduction kWh Saved 20 kWh 25 points
Sustainable Transport KM Carpooled / Biked / Walked 150 KM 20 points
Water Conservation Litres Saved 5,000 L 15 points
Responsible Waste Management KG E-waste / Recyclables 5 KG 30 points
Sustainable Consumption & Procurement # of Reusable Uses 60 uses 10 points

Example: if you save 10 kWh in a month, then for Energy Reduction:
S₁ = 25 × min(1, 10 / 20) = 25 × 0.5 = 12.5 points.

4. System Requirements for Implementation

  • Standardized reporting: ambassadors log units through this portal at agreed frequency.
  • Verification: high-impact entries (energy/water) can include bill snapshots or short notes.
  • Baseline definition: reductions are measured against a baseline (previous month or typical use).
  • Incentivization: scores feed the leaderboard, certificates and recognition programs.
